Dr. Patel Participates in Prostate Cancer Awareness Event
February 16, 2012 (Jacksonville) – Cancer Specialists of North Florida (CSNF) physician Dr. Miten R. Patel, recently participated in a prostate cancer awareness event, “Prostate Defense Begins at 40,” held at Seasons 52 at The St. Johns Town Center on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.
The event was hosted by St. Vincent’s Healthcare, and was sponsored by the National Football League and the American Urological Association Foundation. The event urged men to become more informed about their health; asking their doctors about the PSA test, and what their stats really mean. Dr. Patel spoke to the audience about the importance of early detection and education.
Dr. Patel said of his participation in prostate cancer awareness event, “Education and early detection is key to saving lives. It is important to me to be an advocate for my patients in this way.”
Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in men in the US. The American Cancer Society reports that approximately one in every six men will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime, and approximately 29,000 men die annually from the disease in the US.
Dr. Patel practices at CSNF – Southpoint and CSNF – Southside. He is the newly elected chairman of the department of internal medicine and was recently elected to his second term as the chief of the division of hematology and oncology at St. Vincent’s Southside. Dr. Patel was also recently honored by St. Vincent’s Healthcare with the “Guardian Angel” and “Wisdom” awards in December.
