Dr. Siegel Discusses Lung Cancer on WJCT
Dr. Steven Siegel Discusses the Latest Developments in Lung Cancer Treatment on Jacksonville NPR Affiliate WJCT 89.9 FM
November 9, 2011 (Jacksonville) – Cancer Specialists of North Florida (CSNF) physician Dr. Steven Siegel was a guest on First Coast Connect, with host Melissa Ross, on Jacksonville’s NPR affiliate WJCT 89.9 FM to discuss lung cancer screening, treatment, and advancements in honor of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month on Wednesday November 9.
The interview began with a discussion of risk factors. While more non-smokers are being diagnosed with lung cancer, Dr. Siegel noted, “Ninety percent of lung cancer patients are smokers, former smokers, or have been exposed to secondhand smoke.”
Ross asked Dr. Siegel to discuss the importance of early detection. He said, “When cancer is detected at an earlier stage, the prognosis is better. Unfortunately, we don’t usually detect lung cancer early enough.” He continued, “Chest x-rays as a screening method [for lung cancer] were not shown to help diagnose. However, new studies show that CT scans used for screening showed a twenty percent reduction in deaths in high risk patients.”
When asked about the future of lung cancer treatment, Dr. Siegel was optimistic. He said, “We are now finding ways to examine the DNA of cancer cells to make targeted therapies.”
