What are gynecologic cancers?

Gynecologic cancers are those that arise from the female reproductive organs. These include cancers of the uterus (endometrium), ovary, fallopian tube, cervix, vagina, or vulva.

What is a gynecologic oncologist?

A gynecologic oncologist is trained in both the surgical and medical management of female reproductive cancers. He/she has completed an initial residency in obstetrics and gynecology, followed by an additional 3-4 year fellowship specifically in the gynecologic cancers. The role of the gynecologic oncologist as part of your clinical team is to perform surgery on women with suspected or confirmed gynecologic cancers, make recommendations regarding chemotherapy if needed, and to follow patients through survivorship.

Who should see a gynecologic oncologist?

Our gynecologic oncologist sees women in multiple clinical situations:

What treatments are available for gynecologic cancers?

Treatment can include a variety of modalities such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Our physicians offer our patients minimally invasive surgery using the da Vinci robot surgical system for appropriate cases, as well as laparoscopy and open cases. In the office, our gynecologic oncologists can perform biopsies, colposcopy and cervical excision procedures. They can coordinate care with our radiation oncologists to deliver both external beam and implanted radiation seeds, if necessary. Chemotherapy is delivered on site in our infusion suites, and is either delivered by vein, or directly into the abdomen in some cases.
